NCAA Great Lakes Regional: men's cross country
cover. Now we're at a point where we're moving to the higher-order things, like
particulars in strategy and tactics.
"And we're getting a greater return on our investment because of that. Conceptually, we can move forward at a greater rate, and it's starting to reflect
itself in race results. The guys, with each year and a greater understanding of
the program, are more confident in what they're doing. I'd love to be able to
say you can rush the process, and I wish we could have the last couple years,
but you can't."
After the Wolverines arrived home from Madison, Wis., late Friday night, Gibby
had them report for a long practice Saturday.
He said Michigan should celebrate its regional championship for a few hours
and then move on because only eight days separate the Great Lakes Regional
from the NCAA Championships.
"We have now gotten to the NCAAs three years in a row," Gibby said. "We're
proud of that streak, but what we haven't done is do our thing at NCAAs as a
unit. We have had guys run well, but we haven't had a team run well.
"That is our goal, to execute what we have been preparing for all year in a
crowded, deep NCAA field."
