Devastating BLOW Senior guard Jerian Grant was suspended for a semester by the university due to an academic issue S BY ANDREW OWENS enior guard Jerian Grant has been dismissed from Notre Dame for a semester due to an academic issue, the program announced Dec. 22. "One thing that's very clear, Jerian Grant's going to serve a heck of a penalty," said head coach Mike Brey, who added that he is limited in what he can say about the timeline of events due to university policy. "He is really serving a heck of a penalty. Here's a guy that was on track to graduate, and he needs to [serve a penalty] because he made a mistake and he owns up to it. He's also a guy that was on track to maybe be a first-round draft pick if he continued. And also being a student-athlete, it plays out in a public forum. "There are a lot of things he has to swallow and we have to help him with that, and I've talked to him about that the last day or two." The news became official Dec. 22 when Notre Dame released a statement from Grant in which he both ad- mitted to a "lack of good judgment and the poor decision that I made," while also emphasizing his intention to return next fall for his fifth year of eligibility in basketball and finishing up his degree. Brey said Grant will get a job in his hometown Bowie, Md., while also helping out with his high school alma mater, DeMatha. He can begin the paperwork for readmission this spring and, if admitted, would finish his eighth semester in the fall and then apply for a fifth year of eligibility for the 2015 spring semester. "When you're a parent, you get your heart broken, you get disappointed and it was disappointing," Brey said. "The one thing I want to make clear about Jerian is I love Jerian Grant and I'm really confident that I'll get to coach him again, and if that's the case, I think it's going to end in a great Notre Dame story.
