UNDER THE DOME Notre Dame bumped up the salaries for assistant coaches last summer, which could be an important factor when finding replacements for departed coordinators Chuck Martin and Bob Diaco. PHOTO BY JOE RAYMOND "We have a very specific set of rules for hiring coordinators," he said. "The university established who they have to meet and what the background checks they have to go through, etc. So you have all of that. This is [head coach Brian Kelly's] decision and Brian's call. I'm involved in the strategy of thinking about who. As he identifies candidates, talking to [him] specifically about those candidates and then I will meet them as he brings them in." After an NCAA rule change last winter, a number of programs have added non-coaching administrative football positions, along the lines of recent Notre Dame hire J.R. Sandlin, a recruiting analyst. Swarbrick said they are always looking to enhance programs the university offers to student-athletes, but that he is comfortable with the current staffing of the football program and recruiting. "There will be specific needs related to performance that we'll respond to," he said. "We didn't use to have a nutritionist around here. Now we have two because it clearly helps our student-athletes. I think you'll see us do more in sport science and athlete performance that may have some personnel implications. In terms of just operating the program — logistics, recruiting, football ops, etc. — I feel pretty good about how we're staffed."
