THE FACE OF THE PROGRAM: OT ZACK MARTIN
Nobody better embodied what you want in a Notre Dame football player:
toughness, consistency, "unconscious competence," production, leadership
(rare two-time captain), scholastic aptitude (degree in Mendoza College of
Business) and consummate professionalism.
His 52 consecutive starts over four years will be difficult to ever eclipse,
and it's virtually unfathomable that any Irish player ever again will win the
top offensive lineman award on the team four years in a row. He was the
centerpiece of a line in flux that finished the regular season second nationally in fewest sacks allowed (eight) despite relying so much on that aspect of
the game. It will be a surprise if he doesn't play at least a decade in the NFL.
