Senior quarterback Tommy Rees and senior Cat linebacker Prince Shembo won the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year Awards, respectively. Fifth-year senior left tackle Zack Martin captured the Guardian of the Year Award for the fourth straight season and, in similarly undramatic fashion, freshman Dog linebacker Jaylon Smith earned the Defensive Newcomer of the Year Award. A year after splitting the Lineman of the Year award with senior nose guard Louis Nix III, junior defensive end Stephon Tuitt was the sole winner this season. He finished the regular season with 45 tackles and 7.5 sacks. Notre Dame named fifth-year senior defensive lineman Tyler Stockton the recipient of the Irish Around the Bend Award for community service two days before he and 99 teammates participated in a Kelly Cares Foundation event that allowed 100 local underprivileged youth to spend $100 at Meijer and enjoy a meal at Papa Vino's courtesy of the restaurant. "The selection criteria for the award is we want somebody that when you're talking about community service, it's strictly voluntary," Kelly said. "Tyler is the first on all of our lists when it comes to being part of these events. We don't make any of these events mandatory — you can't if you're talking about truly being in the spirit of community service. He's always the first one that wants to be involved in something." — Andrew Owens
