FOOTBALL RECRUITING Thomas is the No. 21 overall player in the nation, the No. 2 strongside defensive end in the country and the No. 3 recruit in Texas according to 247Sports. • The following Notre Dame commits will all be on site to assist in the recruiting efforts: Red Bank, N.J., offensive tackle Quenton Nelson; Chicago tight end Nic Weishar; and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., linebacker Richard Yeargin III. Date: Jan. 5 at 9 p.m. ET on NFL Network • Fontana, Calif., four-star wide receiver Erik Brown is committed to California, but is keeping a close eye on what takes place on the Notre Dame recruiting front. The 6-2, 170-pound prospect has kept in close contact with Irish wide receivers coach Mike Denbrock, and if Notre Dame misses on one or two targets, Brown could get the green light to pledge to the Irish. His recruitment is definitely one to watch leading up to National Signing Day. 247Sports ranks Brown as the No. 148 overall recruit in the nation, the No. 23 wide receiver in the land and the No. 15 player in California. • Dallas three-star safety Payton Hendrix has narrowed his focus to Arkansas, Notre Dame and Texas Tech. The 6-3, 195-pound recruit is a good friend and teammate of current Irish cornerback commit Nick Watkins. When Watkins committed to Notre Dame Nov. 1, many considered Hendrix a lock to the Irish, but that hasn't come to fruition quite yet. If the Irish staff continues to pursue the talented defensive back, all signs point to him ending up in South Bend. Hendrix is the No. 49 safety in the country and the No. 71 recruit in Texas according to 247Sports. • Carrollton, Ga., punter Tyler Newsome is the only Notre Dame commit that will participate in the game.
