CUP RUNNETH OVER UVa's Soccer Teams Both Advanced To The National Semifinals I BY WHITELAW REID N 2013, THE COLLEGE SOCCER capital of the United States was Charlottesville — and there was little doubt about it. Virginia was the only school in the nation that had both its men's and women's teams make it to the College Cup (soccer's version of the Final Four in its NCAA Tournament). Klöckner Stadium was flowing with fans throughout the fall. The women's team drew its five largest crowds in program history. The games produced an average of 1,923 fans, breaking the school record by more than 750 per game. The men's team finished ninth nationally in attendance, averaging 1,622 fans per contest. "It's a good reflection of soccer here at Virginia, a good reflection of the support both programs get from the university," Virginia women's coach Steve Swanson said. "I think it speaks to the kind of community we live in here. I think they're such a big part of it. i20-21.Soccer Success.indd 1 "The atmosphere at our games and the kind of people that are drawn to our games — they're real knowledgeable soccer fans and have been involved with UVa soccer for a long time. That's been kind of neat and part of the success of both programs." In 2013, Swanson's team, which was ranked No. 1 from almost start to finish, had a schoolrecord 20-game winning streak. From the get-go, Virginia dominated opponents. In their first seven games, the Cavaliers outscored their opponents 28-3. One of those wins was a 4-0 triumph over ninth-ranked Santa Clara. Another was a 5-1 thumping of seventh-ranked Penn State. In the win over the Nittany Lions, Virginia allowed a goal in the seventh minute, and then stormed back with vengeance. Five players scored for the Cavaliers, who outshot Penn State 27-9. Early in the season, a memorable off-the-field moment occurred when Virginia players traveled to Washington to support teammate Morgan Brian, who was playing for the United States 1/16/14 12:15 PM
