Honors/accomplishments: Played in the Offense- Defense All-American Bowl in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 10 and the Chesapeake Bowl at Virginia Beach, Va., Dec. 28 … Named to the 2013 USA Today All-USA Maryland team … Garnered honorable mention all-conference honors as a senior … Helped team finish 11-1, win Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship and earn ranking of No. 19 in final USA Today Super 25 … Named honorable mention U.S. Army National All-Combine by Rivals.com in January 2013 … Se - lected as the 15th-best defensive player at the Rivals Camp Series presented by Under Armour stop in Richmond, Va., last April … Rated the No. 3 underclassman by Rivals.com at the Mid-Atlantic Showcase in Landover, Md., in May 2012. Recruitment: Had offers from Boston College, Duke, Iowa, Virginia and Wake Forest from the BCS ranks … Visited NC State in the spring, and the Pack was regarded as his favorite from that moment forward … A return visit in the summer sealed the deal, and he picked State over fellow finalist Iowa on June 24. Duke and Wake Forest rounded out his top four prior to his commitment. Recruiter of record: Former cornerbacks coach Rich - ard McNutt. Quotable: "Holden is well-known on the camp circuit as an elite pass rusher. He is fast off the line and violent with his hands, and he has good balance. Holden has added a good amount of mass, and the extra strength looks to be helping against those bigger offensive tackles." — Rivals.com Mid- Atlantic recruiting analyst Adam Friedman. Dave Doeren on Holden: "[He] is a real high-energy, quick-twitch and long defensive end. I just really like the energy this guy has. I think he can help us in a lot of different areas, but as a tremendous pass rusher." Scouting report: Quick and fast for a defensive end off the edge … Is a long-armed 6-5, 220-pounder with the frame to support more weight … Has played defensive end only one year, standing up as an outside linebacker prior to his senior campaign, and will need to add more weight. 2014 projection: Unquestionably, NC State will have some true freshmen playing defensive end this season, given the depth chart situation with just four scholarship ends returning. If Holden can add the necessary strength, he will be in the mix. Otherwise he is a likely redshirt. B.J. HILL ■ DT Oakboro (N.C.) West Stanly High • 6-3 • 260 pounds Measurables: At the Shrine Bowl Combine in Charlotte, ran the 40-yard dash in 5.06 seconds and the shuttle in 4.70 … Registered a 24.9-inch vertical leap … Did 12 reps at 185 pounds on the bench press … At NC State's summer camp ran the 40-yard dash in 4.9 seconds. Stats: As a senior, rushed 118 times for 819 yards and five touch- downs … As a junior, played only three games due to a dislocated knee, and ran 55 times for 194 yards and two touchdowns while making 21 tackles on defense. Ratings: Ranked as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com … Rated a three-star prospect, the No. 40 player in the state and the No. 70 defensive end in the country by Scout.com … Listed as a three-star prospect, the No. 42 player in the state and the No. 51 strongside defensive end in the country by 247Sports … Tabbed as a three-star prospect, the No. 26 player in the state and the No. 50 defensive end in the country by ESPN. Honors/accomplishments: Selected as the 11th-best defensive performer at the Charlotte Rivals Camp Series presented by Under Armour in April … Started at safety as a freshman, running back and linebacker as a junior, and fullback and defensive end as a senior … Also played basketball, garnering first-team All-District recognition by the N.C. Basketball Coaches Associated last year, and competed in track and field. Recruitment: Season-ending injury during junior year and lack of certainty about his college position led to slow-developing recruitment, with only an offer from ECU entering the summer … Camped at both UNC and NC State in June and earned offers from both schools the day he worked out … Despite being a life-long UNC fan, Hill verbally committed to NCSU June 12 … Enrolled early at NC State. Recruiter of record: Tight ends/fullbacks coach and special teams coordinator Eddie Faulkner. Quotable: "I think getting people to push in the interior the way the zone game is, that's what college guys want out of those inside tackles: a lot of penetration. He'll be really good at that." — West Stanly head coach James Johnson. Dave Doeren on Hill: "B.J. is going to play defensive tackle for us, but he was also a tailback, tight end and defensive end in high school, so he's a very versatile big man." Scouting report: Well-built 6-3, 260-pounder who moves well both laterally and straight ahead for his size … Ideally suited to be a 3-technique defensive tackle, which lines up between the guard and tackle and uses his quickness to get penetration into the backfield … Will need to bulk up and increase his strength. 2014 projection: Hill is a prospect with exciting potential, but in today's college football world, defensive tackles would ideally weigh at least 280 pounds and preferably be closer to 300 when they hit the field. Thus, Hill is a good bet to take a redshirt year to get stronger. BO HINES ■ WR Charlotte (N.C.) Christian • 6-1 • 190 pounds Measurables: At the Best of the Midwest Combine in Indianapolis, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds, tied for the fastest at the event, and the shuttle in 4.04 seconds. Stats: As a senior, completed 25 of 37 passes for 525 yards and eight touchdowns with one pick, rushed 29 times for 229 yards and two scores, and caught 51 passes for 832 yards and 12 touchdowns … As a junior, hauled in 45 passes for 794 yards and seven scores, and ran 30 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns … As a sophomore, ran 63 times for 336 yards and two touchdowns and pulled in 17 receptions for 136 yards. Ratings: Ranked as a three-star prospect, the No. 24 player in the state and the No. 91 wide receiver in the country by Rivals.com … Rated as a three-star prospect, the No. 36 player in the state and the No. 161 wide receiver in the country by Scout.com … Listed as a three-star prospect, the No. 22 player in the state and the No. 53 athlete in the country by 247Sports … Listed as a three-star prospect, the No. 33 player in the state and the No. 119 wide receiver in the country by ESPN. Honors/accomplishments: A two-time North Carolina Independent Schools Division I all-state and all- conference selection … Named to the 2013 USA Today All-USA North Carolina team … Picked second-team All-Mecklenburg by the Charlotte Observer as a senior … Caught seven passes for 130 yards and a touchdown in the state title game this season to help Christian win a second-straight championship … Also runs track, winning the state independent schools' 3-A state title in the 200 meters last year with a sprint of 22.07 seconds. Recruitment: Blistering 40-yard dash time at the Best of the Midwest Combine was apparently the con - firmation NC State needed on Hines' speed to offer him, becoming his first BCS offer … Was also offered by Nebraska and took a visit there in late March … Committed to NC State April 2, a few days after his trip to Nebraska … Enrolled early at NC State. Recruiter of record: Tight ends/fullbacks coach and special teams coordinator Eddie Faulkner. Quotable: "He has the ability to change the game with his speed; he's a good, solid route-runner, and he's got good hands." — Charlotte Christian head coach Jason Estep. Dave Doeren on Hines: "He's just a tremendous representative of this recruiting class, and what we want, from a personality, leadership, toughness and accountability standpoint." Scouting report: Speedster has soft hands and plays physically … Was a quarterback before moving full-time to receiver his junior season … Displays natural leadership qualities. 2014 projection: Hines is a strong candidate to play as a true freshman. He has proven to be a quick study at receiver, and he displays toughness and is willing and able to block. 44-53.Recruiting Bios.indd 47 2/25/14 2:53 PM
