tional Player of the Year Derek Brown, and ex- celled under first-year assistant coach Joe Moore. Later, fifth-year senior Frank Stams, formerly a fullback and then a second-team outside line- backer in 1987, is taken in the second round with the 44th pick overall. 20 Years Ago: April 23, 1994 With four new assistant coaches — including defensive coordinator Bob Davie and offensive co- ordinator Dave Roberts — Notre Dame concludes spring practice with a 31-0 victory by the No. 1 Blue team. Quarterback Tom Krug earns the Offensive MVP honors by competing 12 of 16 passes for 106 yards, but the buzz centers on his classmate Ron Powlus. The high school National Player of the Year in 1992 sat out Notre Dame's 11-1 season in 1993 because of a broken clavicle, and is inserted later in the spring game. On his first play, Powlus lofts a pass that travels about 40 yards in the air before landing perfectly in the arms of well-covered tight end Pete Chryple- wicz in the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown. Playing behind a reserve unit afterwards, Powlus appears mortal by completing only 1 of 8 passes with two interceptions. To head coach Lou Holtz, it was a valuable learning experience. "The only thing I worry about is how much frus- tration he has experienced in his life," Holtz said of Powlus. "That always concerns me when every- thing is going well for somebody, because it isn't always going to go well for you here." — Lou Somogyi UNDER THE DOME Want to stay up-to-date with all the Irish news?
