Carthy. A knee injury recently ended
McCarthy's NFL career. He played for
the Broncos and Chiefs after leading
Notre Dame in tackles from his safety
spot in 2009. The adjusted respon-
sibilities allow VanGorder to spend
more time watching the secondary
and trying to mold that group into the
bigger part of the defense he is hop-
ing it will become.
Coaching changes also bring new
personalities into the fold, and that
inevitably changes a team's approach.
The most common words players and
recruits used when asked to describe
their new coordinator were "intel-
ligent" and "brilliant." VanGorder
doesn't have the overflowing energy
or demand the strict discipline of Di-
aco, but Kelly said it was clear during
the first practice that he would hold
his players to hard-to-reach expecta-
tions. Diaco's influence still lives on
in the team's approach, but Kelly is
hoping his new staff is ready to push
his defense a little further and a little
faster.
"When I hired Bob to come here,
we needed to build consistency and
stability with our defense, and he's
certainly answered the charge that I
had given him," Kelly said. "We have
now developed what we consider a
demeanor on our defense and an ex-
pectation.
"Now we're going to take it to the
next level defensively, and Brian is
going to be able to take our defense to
that next level. I think that that's what
you'll see in what Coach VanGorder
will bring to our defense." ✦
