with our guys and relationships with our guys, more so in a year like this than ever before. You keep plugging forward with it. I enjoy being in prac- tice each day with our guys. They're upbeat. "You don't have time to hang your head or, 'Woe is me.' As long as I've been in this thing, you go through cycles in the profession, and I've been through them before. It's how you get out of it currently and how you move forward next season, which you think about a lot." Notre Dame will benefit from play- ing some games in Italy next August. The showcase will provide a glimpse into the development of a thin front- court and Jackson's ability to replace Atkins as the starting point guard. DEMETRIUS JACKSON MISSES TWO GAMES Jackson missed two games in mid- February due to what head coach Mike Brey called "poor academic habits." Jackson's unexpected absence at the Feb. 11 overtime win over Clemson created a swirl of speculation that the Mishawaka, Ind., native would trans- fer to Illinois, one of the finalists dur- ing his recruitment. Brey said it was more a matter of helping Jackson to improve academically than a question of his happiness during a difficult first season with the Irish. "With [Demetrius], it's real simple, just academic habits," said Brey, who added that he has dealt with this type of situation plenty of times as a coach. "He had such a great fall semester … and summer." Brey would not delve into specifics about Jackson's academic issues, but only offered that he "didn't get off to as good a start as he did in the fall semester." 2013-14 NOTRE DAME MEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE Date Opponent (TV) Result/Time (ET) Nov. 8 Miami (Ohio) W, 74-62 Nov. 10 Stetson W, 80-49 Nov. 17 Indiana State L, 83-70 Nov. 22 Santa Clara W, 84-69 Nov. 24 Army W, 93-60 Dec. 1 Cornell W, 101-67 Dec. 3 at Iowa L, 98-93 Dec. 7 Delaware# W, 80-75 Dec. 9 Bryant# W, 70-59 Dec. 11 North Dakota State# L, 73-69 Dec. 14 Indiana@ W, 79-72 Dec. 21 Ohio State# L, 64-61 Dec. 29 Canisius W, 87-81 (OT) Jan. 4 Duke* W, 79-77 Jan. 7 North Carolina State* L, 77-70 Jan. 11 at Georgia Tech* L, 74-69 Jan. 15 at Maryland* L, 74-66 Jan. 19 Virginia Tech* W, 70-63 Jan. 21 at Florida State* L, 76-74 Jan. 25 at Wake Forest* L, 65-58 Jan. 28 Virginia* L, 68-53 Feb. 1 Boston College* W, 76-73 (OT) Feb. 3 at Syracuse* L, 61-55 Feb. 8 North Carolina* L, 73-62 Feb. 11 Clemson* W, 68-64 (2OT) Feb. 16 at Boston College* W, 73-69 Feb. 19 at Miami* L, 71-64 Feb. 22 at Virginia* L, 70-49 Feb. 26 Georgia Tech* W, 65-62 March 1 Pittsburgh* L, 85-81 (OT) March 3 at North Carolina* L, 63-61 March 12 vs. Wake Forest^ 1 p.m. # Gotham Classic @ Crossroads Classic (Notre Dame, In- diana, Purdue, Butler); * ACC game; ^ ACC Tournament at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.
