BIG SUMMER BOOST
Dear The Wolverine:
Just when I was wondering what
could get me fired up about Wolver-
ine football during this annual in-
terminable summer waiting period,
I watched videos of the June 6-7
weekend's Michigan Women's Foot-
ball Academy and Men's Football
Experience.
Both were fundraisers, the pro-
ceeds going to the U-M Cancer Cen-
ter and Prostate Cancer Research,
respectively. The Michigan coaches
and players gave of their time so
participants, about 500 women and
70 men, could experience what it
is like to be a Wolverine football
player.
The videos are a must-see for all
Michigan fans, regardless of age,
sex, or level of fanaticism, and are
a source of button-popping pride.
First I laughed at a brunette putting
a hip fake on Willie Henry. Then I
soaked a handkerchief listening to
Tiffany Hecklinski's (Coach Jeff's
wife) account of her Cancer Center
treatments, remembering when my
own daughter also went through
chemotherapy six years ago. We too
have a great Cancer Center here in
Kalamazoo.
Watching the men's camp action
was encouraging, observing middle-
aged men like myself trying to be
light on their feet executing agility
drills. That was not the Glee Club I
heard singing "The Victors" under
the direction of Devin Gardner. I
came away inspired!
