contest, Notre Dame quarterback Rusty Lisch takes possession at his 20-yard line. Lisch completes five passes, capped by a 14-yarder to tight end Dean Masztak for the touchdown with 42 seconds remaining. He then tosses the game-winning two- point conversion to flanker Pete Holohan for the 18-17 win. It is the largest deficit the Irish had ever come back from to win in Notre Dame Stadium. It also is the first time Notre Dame wins any game with one quarterback attempting more than 40 passes. Lisch completes 24 of 43 attempts for 336 yards. 30 Years Ago: Oct. 27, 1984 Embattled fourth-year Notre Dame head coach Gerry Faust and his 3-4 Irish travel to 5-0-1 LSU, which would win the SEC title that year. Notre Dame had just lost three straight games at home (Miami, Air Force and South Carolina) for the first time since the 2-8 campaign in 1956, and the toughest part of the schedule was ahead. Even The Cincinnati Enquirer, based in the city where Faust built Moeller High School into a super- power, editorialized it is time for the overmatched Faust to step down with his 21-19-1 career record. So naturally, after falling behind 7-0 in the first five minutes … Notre Dame dominates the Tigers, outscoring them 30-7 in the next 53 minutes before a late Hail Mary touchdown by LSU in the closing seconds makes the final 30-22. Running back Allen Pinkett ties an Irish record with 40 carries that ac- cumulate 162 yards rushing. Quarterback Steve Beuerlein completes 16 of 23 passes for 168 yards, and John Carney boots three field goals. Sports Illustrated puts Faust on the cover the next week with an extensive spread, including a two- page layout of him praying in the Grotto. The headline "Somebody Up There May Be Listening" is used to complement the photo. "Our boys would have quit a long time before the first quarter if they'd believed everything that had been said about 'em," an ecstatic Faust said afterwards. "But they were strong. And I'll tell you what else. I'm a strong guy, too. I'm gonna make it." — Lou Somogyi UNDER THE DOME Want to stay up-to-date with all the Irish news?
