FAN FORUM PERCEPTION PROBLEMS I am concerned that college football is becoming like Olympic gymnastics and figure skating. It's in the eyes of the judges as to who gets a chance for the gold medal rather than what hap- pens on the field. The game appears to be devolving into good wins, good losses, bad wins and bad losses. I hope that someday soon, we will have a true playoff [say 12 teams] where style points will be- come less important than actual wins and losses. What should Notre Dame do about Navy? I have scratched my head for years why Notre Dame cannot deci- sively defeat this service academy on most occasions despite the supposed talent differential. Give Navy credit, but they also lose to the likes of West- ern Kentucky. Fair or not, the football intelligentsia views Navy as a patsy, i.e. a team that should be handled easily, on the Notre Dame schedule. As a result, anything less than a blowout is almost consid- ered tantamount to a loss by the poll- sters. Notre Dame either needs to learn how to stop Navy, something they haven't been able to do consistently for years, or get another team on its schedule that better serves its inter- ests of trying to get into the four-team playoff. Given the time it takes to pre- pare for this team, and the unusually high amount of injuries that appear to happen in this game, it may be time to revisit the usefulness of the "rivalry." Notre Dame may have beaten Navy 47 out of the last 50 years, but is sure doesn't feel like it. Ed Polli Bridgeport, Ohio NAVY NEEDS TO BE CUT I am a college football purist and I totally respect all of what comprises the lore of Notre Dame football. I re- member and respect the commitment made by Fr. Theodore Hesburgh in Many Irish followers are wondering whether it's time to discontinue the series with Navy. PHOTO BY BILL PANZICA BE HEARD!
