would play for the national title a year later; and the victory in the rain and mud at Pac-10 champion USC,
which would go on to win the Rose Bowl.
The Trojans lose six fumbles in the wet conditions, while Notre Dame commits only one turnover. After USC
takes a 7-0 lead, Irish freshman wideout Tim Brown scores his first career touchdown on an 11-yard pass from
quarterback Steve Beuerlein. A three-yard Allen Pinkett scoring run provides a 13-7 halftime lead and two

The No. 1-ranked Fighting Irish extend their school-record winning streak to 23 with a 34-23 victory at Penn
State. In the process, they rush for 425 yards — the most ever surrendered by a Nittany Lions team.
Quarterback Tony Rice headlines the ground assault with 141 yards on and two touchdowns on 26 carries.
Pennsylvania natives Ricky Watters and Raghib "Rocket" Ismail add 128 and 84 yards rushing, respectively, on
16 and nine carries. Especially notable is Penn State had allowed only 9.2 points per game.
"I didn't expect to run for that many yards even if this had been a marathon," Irish head coach Lou Holtz
said afterwards.
