f Jeff Jackson stuck to the letter of his
laws rather than their spirit, Peter
Schneider would not have even played
against Vermont on Halloween. The se‑
nior wing did not practice the day be‑
fore, and per Jackson's typical rules that
would have prevented Schneider from
taking the ice. Not only did Schneider
help Notre Dame (5‑4‑1, 1‑0‑1 Hockey
East) to a 3‑2 victory over Vermont to
open the conference season, he also
made a position switch in doing so.
Schneider missed that Thursday prac‑
tice to attend his grandmother's funeral
in Vienna, Austria. When he asked his
head coach for permission to take a few
days leave, he also indicated he would
still like to play against the Catamounts.
"Anytime something like that hap‑
pens, I don't care if you're from South
Bend or you're from Austria, it's a fam‑
ily member," Jackson said. "Obviously,
it was important that he went.
"When I said you have to go, he said
he'd like to play Friday. I have a policy
that if you don't practice on Thursdays
— usually unless for some unforeseen
reason — you don't play on Friday. I
