front. We have to be able to win in the trenches, and we didn't do that versus Arizona State. "I haven't watched the film, so I'm not sure if we did that tonight, but we gave up 200-plus rushing yards. We've got to go back and correct our mistakes." Golson started the day's scoring with a 61-yard touchdown run off a read-option less than a minute into the game. He finished with 10 carries for 78 yards to complement Folston's performance and give the Irish 211 total rushing yards. Northwestern responded to Notre Dame's opening score with a 74-yard drive of their own, culminating with a two-yard run from reserve redshirt freshman quar- terback Matt Alviti. Notre Dame fifth-year senior corner- back Cody Riggs ended the Wildcats' second drive prematurely by forcing a fumble that fifth-year senior Austin Collinsworth scooped up and returned 32 yards for a touchdown. The ensuing extra point attempt sparked Kelly's kicking concerns. Zaire's failed hold led to Northwest- ern returning the block for two points the other way. Brindza successfully kicked four more point after attempts before Kelly made the pivotal decision to go for two in the fourth quarter. ✦ Sophomore wide receiver Will Fuller had another big game, hauling in nine receptions for 159 yards and three touchdowns.
