FAN FORUM ity of the Notre Dame experience, has been sadly lacking in this affair. The university's leader, Fr. John Jenkins, has been visibly absent in the whole process, as has our athletic director. The university has created an ideal balance between sports and education, excelling at both, but those who ad- minister it seem almost embarrassed by the celebrity that their self-pro- moted sports programs have achieved. Notre Dame works hard to promote those programs and benefits greatly from them. But celebrity is a dangerous ele- ment and if you want it, you have to be ready to manage it, own up to it and deal with the negatives that come with it. The university administration hasn't, in this case, even come close. Bill DeSeta '58 Via the Internet MORE INFAMY Regarding the "Infamous Calls" ar- ticle in the Nov. 10, 2014 Blue & Gold Illustrated, I believe the excessive cel- ebration penalty after Notre Dame's final touchdown in the 1993 Boston College game was also "infamous." It was critical to the resulting field posi- tion for BC's game-winning field goal as time expired. We all remember the implications. Jim Brady '72 Via the Internet Mr. Brady, the penalty was not for ex- cessive celebration. Notre Dame pinned Boston College at its 10, but the Eagles instead started at the 25 on a personal foul call. The officials told Irish head coach Lou Holtz a Notre Dame player had used an illegal forearm on the kickoff after the Irish had taken a 39-38 lead. The next day Holtz said he had reviewed film "and saw nothing that was even close to a penalty." The Irish still controlled their destiny on that drive but lost. Still, those 15 yards helped BC a lot. FROM THE WEBSITE Although Notre Dame was out of the playoff hunt after the loss at Arizona State, the fall to No. 18 in the selection committee's poll still evoked reaction: 82slice: The bias in the committee against our school is undeniable. Phi_sig23: We are a nice top-15 team. I am a realist. If we play like we played against FSU, we can play with anyone in the country. Problem is we don't do that very often. We need to take care of the ball and business, and we will find ourselves in a nice bowl game against a quality team. Jemcmanusnd: The logic is not consistent across the board. This is why you need to use some numbers and hard data when making these rankings. Rankings should most not be based off subjective opinions of a group of people only. SP_Hennessey: What quality win do we have? Stanford? Unranked. Our ranking is appropriate if not a little better than I anticipated. Our best argument is we played hard against FSU, who has let just about anyone hang around with them. Anowicki: This whole thing should just be kept secret until after the final games are played a la Selec- tion Sunday, and expand it to 8.
