MEN'S BASKEBALL
ter Dei and versatile power forward Eli-
jah Burns of Troy (N.Y.) Blair Academy.
Ryan became the first of the trio to
verbally pledge to the program July 11.
247Sports rates him as a four-star pros-
pect, the No. 106 overall player in the
country, the No. 19 small forward na-
tionally and the No. 4 player from New
York. Had it not been for a torn labrum
injury suffered last winter that kept him
off the court until late July, Brey expects
the prospect would be ranked much
higher.
"It was great to have him commit
during the July period, to have him
and Elijah both commit while we're out
there recruiting gave us direction on
who to look at the rest of the summer,"
Brey said. "We've been recruiting Matt
Ryan for a long time. He was out last
year with the hip issues. I'd say he's
about 95 percent back from that, and we
expect a full recovery.
"I don't think there's a better shooter
in the class," Brey continued, compar-
ing him to past Irish sharp-shooters
Matt Carroll, Chris Quinn, Kyle McA-
larney and others. "No one got to see
him much in the last year, so people
have forgotten about him a little bit.
