FOOTBALL RECRUITING a loss to Kansas State in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, and that limited U-M's final haul in the recruiting process. The Wolverines missed on a pair of five-star defensive ends — the No. 1 player in the nation in Da'Shawn Hand of Woodbridge (Va.) High and local standout Malik Mc- Dowell of Southfield High School — both considered heavy Michigan leans at one time. Despite those results on the field, U-M did manage to retain all the players who committed to become Wolverines. There were some scares (five-star defensive back Jabrill Pep- pers considered taking an official visit to UCLA), and some misses (four-star safety Montae Nicholson was turned away by Michigan, ul- timately committing to Michigan State, where he's starting as a true freshman), but every prospect who picked Michigan went wire-to-wire as a member of the class. THE CURRENT CLASS The 2015 class has seen the wheels fall off in Michigan recruiting, to a certain extent. U-M's 5-5 start to the season (following a 7-6 season, which itself followed an 8-5 year on the field) has played a role, as has coach- ing uncertainty clouding Ann Arbor. The Wolverines had locked down a few early pledges prior to the begin- ning of their junior seasons, and the first wave of decommitments came just after the conclusion of the 2013 campaign.
