4 College football head coaches the past 50 years that defeated the Irish both as a player and then later as a head coach. Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald became the most recent after guid- ing the Wildcats to a 43-40 overtime victory Nov. 15. He also was the star linebacker at Northwestern when it won at Notre Dame in 1995 (17-15). The other three were Bobby Williams, Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw. Williams was a captain/defensive back on the 1981 Purdue team that defeated the Irish (15-14), and then head coach at Michigan State when the Spartans won in 2000 (27-21) and 2001 (17-10). Harbaugh was the Michigan quarterback in 1985 (20-12) and 1986 (24-23), and the Stanford head coach in 2009 (45-38) and 2010 (37-14). Shaw was a wide receiver at Stanford in 1992 (33-16), and the Cardinal head coach in 2011 (28-14) and 2013 (27-20). 6 Consecutive Notre Dame tight ends in the last 10 seasons that have been named as at least one of eight semifinalists for the John Mackey Award, which is given to the nation's top player at that position, with current senior Ben Koyack making this year's cut Nov. 17. The others were Anthony Fasano (2002-05); John Carlson (2004-07); Kyle Rudolph (2008-10); Tyler Eifert (2009-12), who was the recipient in his senior year; and Troy Niklas (2011-13). Kelly was listed behind only Ole Miss' Hugh Freeze (5/1), and behind Kelly were Oklahoma's Bob Stoops (7/1), UCLA's Jim Mora (9/1), Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy (10/1), Arizona's Rich Rodriguez (12/1) and South Carolina's Steve Spurrier (25/1). 75.5 Percent of the tackles (71 of 94) by Notre Dame's defense in its 43-40 overtime loss at to Northwest- ern were made by players in either their first or second year of competition, including the top eight: sophomore linebacker Jaylon Smith (10), freshman linebacker Nyles Morgan (10), sophomore end Isaac Rochell (nine), junior nose guard Jarron Jones (seven, and has two years of eligibility remaining), sophomore cornerback Cole Luke (seven), freshman safety Drue Tranquill (seven), sophomore cornerback Devin Butler (seven) and freshman linebacker Greer Martini (five).
