Fifty-four years later, on Oct. 28, 1950, the Fighting Irish were defeated for the first time when they tallied at least 30 points, a 36-33 setback at home versus Michigan State. This year 's 43-40 loss to Northwestern Nov. 15 marked the first time Notre Dame scored at least 40 points in regulation time, but still ended up losing. The Irish had first pos- session in the extra session and failed to score, and the Wildcats followed with a field goal on their series. There were two other occasions when Notre Dame scored at least 40 points in defeat, but in both of those cases one or more overtimes were needed to reach 40.
