The struggles with sudden change
are somewhat surprising when looking
at how the defense started the season
by succeeding when backed against the
wall. In the win over Syracuse Sept. 27,
the Orange turned five Irish turnovers
into only 15 points on the evening.
After Golson's lost fumble (the first
of 2014) on the opening drive, the de‑
fense forced a Syracuse punt a few
plays later. When Golson tossed an in‑
terception toward the end of the first
quarter, the Irish defense rose again
Opponents have scored 185 points off Notre Dame's 23 turnovers through 10 games, with the Irish yield-
ing touchdowns in all seven sudden-change possessions that started on their side of the field.
