We did a great job with all of that." In the College Cup semifinals, Virginia squared off with upstart UMBC. Less than five minutes into the game, redshirt first-year midfielder Pablo Aguilar made a textbook tackle on Marquez Fernandez near midfield, stripping the defender of the ball. Aguilar then passed to a streaking Madison on the wing, and Madison fired a shot that deflected off the left foot of defender Oumar Ballo and into the lower left corner of the UMBC net. "[Aguilar] made a great defensive play and I was in a great position to make a run," Madison said. "[He] was able to send me the ball and I was able to put it in the back of the net." The goal was the first surrendered by UMBC in four tournament games. Given both teams' lack of scoring punch, it changed the complexion of the contest. Virginia, behind its stout defense — a unit that included fourth-year Matt Brown, third-year Scott Thomsen and the Sullivan brothers, Kyler (a fourth- year) and Sheldon (a redshirt first-year) — was able to keep UMBC at bay the rest of the game. That set the stage for the championship game against UCLA two days later. In 2006, the Bruins had beaten Virginia 4-0 in the College Cup.
