UVa was going to stick to what had gotten it to that point. The Cavaliers flummoxed UCLA with an ultra-defensive approach that led to the game being scoreless after 110 minutes of action. In the subsequent shootout, second-year for- ward Riggs Lennon was the hero. The Arizona na- tive softly tapped a shot toward the middle of the goal that rolled untouched into the back of the net. Lennon ripped off his No. 12 jersey and thrust his arms into the air. As he was mobbed by team- mates, multicolored streamers went shooting onto the field and fans chanted "U-V-A!" Virginia, behind Brown — who was named Most Valuable Defensive Player — upset No. 2-seed UCLA in a shootout 4-2. "When I was watching the penalties before, I could tell [the goalie]] was going off a little bit early," Lennon said. "So I knew that if I went down the middle, there was really a small chance that he was going to stay there." The NCAA title was UVa's seventh, the school's 21st overall, and its first since men's ten- nis defeated UCLA in 2013. With that, Virginia miraculously had reached the top of the pyramid. "I told these guys before the game that being the best at what you do, being the absolute best at what you do, there's no better feeling," said Gelnovatch, the NCAA championship trophy sit- ting right beside him. "[There are] 205 Division I college soccer teams all waiting to do what we just did. Really, really rewarding in the manner in which we did it." ◆ Third-year forward Darius Madison, who was one of six Cavs named to the College Cup all-tournament team, scored the game-winning goal against UMBC in the semifinals.
