REMEMBERING DONALD KEOUGH AND CHARLES RICE The Feb. 26 death of revered former Notre Dame president Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh somewhat overshadowed the passing of two other longtime esteemed figures at the school in the two days prior. On Feb. 24, Donald R. Keough died at age 88 in Atlanta. Keough was the president and chief operating officer from 1981-93 of Coca-Cola and had served as a Trustee at Notre Dame since 1978, including as the chair from 1986-91. His family also has made about $50 million in gifts to the University of Notre Dame, which announced last year it would create the Donald R. Keough School of Global Affairs. The day after Keough's death, longtime Notre Dame Law School professor and author Charles Edward Rice died at age 83. He began his work at Notre Dame in 1969 and continued to teach university classes right into December 2014. His conservative views on the Catholic Church often clashed with the more liberal nature of Father Hesburgh. Rice, a prominent speaker, authored 13 books on constitutional law, pro-life issues, and Catholic identity at the University of Notre Dame. Rice also helped coach the Notre Dame boxing club for 30 years and was a referee and advisor for the university's annual Bengal Bouts boxing tournament, which raised funds for Holy Cross Missions in Bangladesh.
