MAKING A SPLASH
Second-year swimmer Leah Smith captured two
national titles at the NCAA Championships March 19-
21 in Greensboro, N.C. She got things started by
winning the 500-yard freestyle, breaking the NCAA
record in prelims with a time of 4:30.37. She then
took the 1,650-yard freestyle crown, setting UVa and
ACC records with a time of 15:34.46 while winning
by 12 seconds.
Smith, whose efforts helped lead the Cavaliers to a program-record fifth-place finish, became the second woman
in school history to win two NCAA titles and the first to win multiple events at the same national meet. She also
became the third Cavalier woman to place in the top eight in three individual events at the same NCAA meet.
The seven-time All-American has been named one of four nominees for the 2015 Honda Sports Award, which
is presented annually by the Collegiate Women Sports Awards to the top female athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned
sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics."
