Madison Square Garden. UVa fell behind early, fought valiantly, but in the end couldn't stop Spartans point guard Travis Trice and was sent home with a 60-54 loss in the third round — a much earlier exit than many Virginia fans had been hoping for after such a successful regular- season run. In a slug-it-out game where both teams had scoring droughts, Trice — who scored 23 points — was the difference. "If Trice didn't get going, we could be talking about something totally different right now," said Anderson, who finished with just eight points. "But when you have one player just scorching hot like he was getting up the court … that's what's kind of took the energy from us, the life from us, to start the game." A year after finishing with a 30-7 record, Vir- ginia ended with a 30-4 mark. "It stings right now, of course — the finality of the season [ending] after we had a heck of a year with these guys and what they've done," Bennett said. "It just leaves that feeling of we should have taken it further. "But it doesn't take away, when all the dust settles, of what was accomplished. We give thanks for that but certainly learn from what took place." Of the Cavaliers' four losses, one came to a team that made the Sweet 16 (UNC); one came to a team that made the Elite Eight (Louisville); one came to a Final Four participant (Michigan State); and one came to the national champion (Duke). As far as encores go, the 2014-15 season wasn't too shabby. ◆ Redshirt third-year forward Anthony Gill led UVa in rebounding (6.5 per game), field goal percent- age (58.6), steals (29) and double- doubles (three).
