golfer is his willingness to adapt and learn from other players. "I'm very attentive to detail when I'm playing," he noted. "I've learned from past experiences. I've learned from players from other schools. You can learn so much when you're playing with great players. "I've added new shots to my repertoire that I can use on the course and how to execute those in tournaments. That makes me confident in what I'm doing and trusting the shots I've been developing." Sargent added that McCarthy's drive and win- ning mentality are also imperative to his tremen- dous success. "He a competitor," Sargent said. "I've talked to our team a lot about this, and I use Denny and Ben Kohles, who played on the PGA Tour two years ago — those two guys, they refuse to lose and you wish more kids had it. "He has a mentality of going out and competing every single day. Whether it's in practice, if they're playing video games in the back of the van or table games at Cracker Barrel, Denny has to win." That competitive drive will serve McCarthy well in his final stretch run at Virginia and certainly in his pro career. And while McCarthy is excited about the future, he said the last spring in Charlot- tesville will be bittersweet. "I fell in love with UVa when I visited," he said. "The more people I've met, the more experiences I've shared with my friends, it's gotten sweeter and sweeter every year and that's why it's going to be hard for me to leave this place. "I've come to enjoy and appreciate all of the people here, the whole atmosphere, and I just love it." It will be bittersweet for Sargent as well. "Working with good people makes the job eas- ier, and he's a good kid with a good personality," the coach said. "He's got a lot of common sense and he's smart. He's a quality, model citizen and he's certainly a byproduct of his parents. "He's everything you expect to see in a success- ful student-athlete at Virginia." ◆
