Jordan Young didn't begin the indoor track and field season with a bang. Instead, he commenced it with a loud thud. When the Cavaliers began their indoor season Jan. 16 at the Virginia Tech Invitational, Young set a school record in the men's weight throw — on his very first throw no less. Young heaved the steel ball 66 feet, 10 inches to shatter the previous school record by more than three feet. He broke it again on his second throw (69-1) and added an exclama- tion point by erasing that record on his third throw, which sailed 70-3.5. At the ACC Indoor Championships Feb. 26, he topped his school record again. His toss of 75-2.5 — which ranked fourth in the nation at the time — earned him the ACC title. He also finished second in the shot put and was named Co-Men's Field MVP of the meet. Young went on to notch a fourth-place finish in the weight throw (75-0.5) at the NCAA Indoor Championships en route to All-America accolades. My advice to student-athletes is: The most important thing I've found out is to be where you need to be when you need to be there. That's the key to staying out of trouble and making teachers happy. The primary challenge facing student-athletes today is: Time management when you're traveling. I redshirted a year and had to learn how to stay up on my schoolwork. Time management and traveling can be a struggle. The best thing about UVa is: My coach [Martin Maric]. That was one of the main reasons I transferred here from Arizona. He's a good coach and I knew he would help me achieve what I could. Why I chose UVa: One of the biggest reasons after I did some research was I found out it was one of the best aca- demic institutions in the country outside of the Ivy League, plus it has a beautiful campus. What I like the most about track and field: There's a competition every day with myself. I never worry about winning, but I worry about competing against myself. You can see your gains every single day. The highlight of my athletic career: Becoming a first- team All-American this past indoor season. But I know it's not even close to where I can be. It's keeping me motivated to be a first-team outdoor All-American. The most important thing I've learned from track and field: Time management along with the struggles GETTING TO KNOW SECOND-YEAR THROWER JORDAN YOUNG CAVALIER SPORTS WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE … … TV show?
