SOFTBALL (34-6, 7-2 BIG TEN) No. 4 Michigan sat atop the Big Ten standings, a game ahead of Minnesota and Nebraska, with a 10-2 record in con- ference play through April 12 … The Wolverines swept Rutgers April 10-12 in Piscataway, N.J., 18-0, 16-3 and 5-0 to surge into the conference's top spot … Junior Sierra Lawrence set career highs in doubles (10) and home runs (10) in just 43 games this season — and boasted a career-best .389 average, im- proving upon the .351 she hit last year … Junior Sierra Romero continued her torrid pace at the plate, batting .505 on the year (50 for 99) … Romero's 189 ca- reer RBI rank her third in the Michigan annals, 11 behind second-place Amanda Chidester (2009-12), while her 54 home runs are also third, four back of Dorian Shaw (58, 2008-11) … Michigan will return home for a three-game series against Indiana April 17-19 and will host Michigan State April 21. MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING Michigan finished in third place at the NCAA Championships March 26-28, earning 312 points to trail only Texas (528 points) and California (399 points) … The Wolverines received top-five indi- vidual performances from: freshman P.J. Ransford (second in 1,650-yard freestyle); Bruno Ortiz (fourth in 100-yard freestyle); junior Dylan Bosch (third in 200-yard butterfly and fifth in 400-yard individual medley); junior Anders Nielsen (second in 200-yard freestyle and fourth in 500- yard freestyle); and senior Richard Funk (fifth in 100-yard breaststroke) … U-M also had top-five finishes in the 800-yard freestyle relay (fourth) and the 400-yard medley relay (fourth)… Nielsen missed winning the 200-yard freestyle by a mere seven-tenths of a second while Ransford lost his race by 1.98 seconds … In total, 10 swimmers garnered 28 All-America honors, with Ortiz (six) and Bosch (five) leading the way.
