MICHIGAN BASKETBALL Plaudits Continue While Trey Burke Makes Transition Through Dec. 18, Burke averaged 13.1 points, 4.7 assists and 3.2 rebounds a game for the Wolverines. Burke went 7 of 11 from the field, T here are always a few bumps in the road when basketball play- ers transition from the high school to the college level. So far, though, Trey Burke seems to have floored it through the speed bumps, gotten air- borne and come down in control, on all four wheels. Burke locked up his second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor of the young season the second week of December. He poured in a career- high 20 points in Michigan's 90-80 win over Oakland University at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Dec. 10, and didn't need a lot of shots to get it done. 34 THE WOLVERINE JANUARY 2012 hit 3 of 6 three-point attempts and went 3 of 4 from the free throw line, along with tying a career high by dishing out nine assists. Burke earned his first Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor the final week of November. Through Dec. 18, Burke averaged 13.1 points, 4.7 assists and 3.2 re- bounds a game for the Wolverines. He led the team in assists and was second in scoring only to sophomore Tim Hardaway Jr. (15.4). "Coming in, a lot of people had questions about Trey Burke's play, but everyone is getting a great idea PHOTO BY PER KJELDSEN of what this guy is," Hardaway said. "He's a complete ballplayer. He runs the team, and everybody stays be- hind him 100 percent. "Everybody trusts him with the ball. If he keeps on doing that, keeps our trust in him, he's going to be one heck of a ballplayer." Hardaway understands what it's like to come in and perform at a high level as a true freshman. He aver- aged 13.9 points a game last year as a frosh, just a shade behind Darius Morris' team-leading 15.0. Hardaway, though, insists that Burke looked more ready from the start to jump right into the fray.
