INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Student Athlete of the Month Redshirt Freshman Cross Country Runner Sarah Zieve Growing up in the small, outdoorsy town of Northport, N.Y., on the north shore of Long Island, Sarah Zieve developed a passion for athletics at an early age. She has been doing something active since she could walk, and credits her parents for instilling the need for athletics in her life. "Both of my parents are really active," she said. "My dad was a collegiate wres- tler at Cal Tech in California from 1969-73, and was actually recently inducted into their athletic Hall of Fame. "I was a competitive gymnast until I was 15, and then started running and haven't looked back since. I've always been really passionate about running, which allowed me to em- brace my competitive spirit." Along with athletics, Zieve is serious about academics, as well. She gradu- ated high school as a member of the National Honor Society and made the Principal's List each year. She was a U-M Academic Award Recipient in 2014 and figures to be again this season, and was accepted into the Gerald R. Ford School of Pub- lic Policy for next year. Zieve has also been named the managing editor of the South Campus Times for the 2015-16 school year. The student-ath- lete-driven periodical is distributed digitally once monthly around the athletic community. Habits that she developed early have helped her succeed in the classroom. "Having been involved in sports at a young age, I had to learn time manage- ment early," she explained. "I was always good at coming home and getting my homework done right away. I figured out how to get things done to be successful in the classroom." Getting accepted into the Ford School of Public Policy fulfills a goal Zieve had the day she applied to Michigan.
