UNDER THE DOME "Given how much USC has botched these last two hires, the school should swing for the fences this time. And that includes, perhaps, seeing if there's any interest from the coaches leading the Trojans' two biggest rivals — Notre Dame's Brian Kelly and UCLA's Jim Mora. … Kelly has resurrected the Notre Dame program, and, in spite of a ridiculous amount of injuries, still has ND in the top 15. He has recruited nationally and done very well in Southern California. Kelly has won big everywhere he's been and even got the Irish into the national title game three years ago. As big a job as ND is, there are still a bunch of headaches and hurdles you have to overcome in South Bend and six years at Notre Dame is a long time. Would he be tempted to look at USC?" — FOX Sports columnist Bruce Feldman on Brian Kelly as a possible fit at USC, an idea the Irish head coach dismissed at an Oct. 13 press conference "We [educate] through our Team Works program. We do memo, informational memos regarding that fairly regularly. I couldn't tell you how many times a year, but it's multiple times a year. As well as follow- up with our strength staff and our athletic training staff where we'll do a walk through in the locker room to check through cubbies to make sure that everything has been checked and approved. "But we're still dealing with a young population that sometimes sees the marketed product out there and wants to try it. We try to do a great job of educating, and I think we do. But we're also concerned every day about it. "So we're educating — I've had to go through this early in my career I lost a player because of it. They pick something up at the local pharmacy and thought it was okay, and we lost a player. I know we con- stantly talk to our players about it and they're educated." — Kelly on how Notre Dame educates players on over-the-counter supplements (Florida quarterback Will Grier was suspended for the season Oct. 12 after failing an NCAA drug test, and he claimed he tested positive for performance enhancing drugs due to an over-the-counter product he consumed) THEY SAID IT "I thought I was going to get in trouble the first time I heard it because we were actually warming up, and she said, 'Boy, if you don't look at me.' So it was kind of like, do I look at her? What do I do? What do I do? So now I give her like a little hand sign so that she knows that I heard her. But the first time, definitely it was scary." Senior defensive lineman Sheldon Day on hearing his mother, Carol Boyd, screaming encouragement from the stands TWEET OF THE WEEK @d_tranquill: "Life can take almost everything from you, BUT it can't take what you know. Know your identity, & don't let trials define you." Sophomore safety Drue Tranquill, who is currently rehabbing a season-ending knee injury for the second straight year PHOTO BY JOE RAYMOND
