FAN FORUM are not walking through the door at Notre Dame — and if they were, the academic, recruiting and be- havior baggage of many of their teams would be unacceptable to this Domer. I am proud of Brian Kelly's will- ingness to recruit within Notre Dame's academic expectations of its student-athletes, no whining when some get in academic trouble, and still he keeps bringing in outstand- ing kids. Someday Brian will leave Notre Dame, maybe burnt out as was Ara, maybe upset at the recruiting restric- tions as was Lou, maybe enticed by the NFL? If he wants to coach col- lege football elsewhere, there will be a lineup of Power Five conference athletic directors on his doorstep the morning following his resignation. In a decade or two we will look back on the Brian Kelly years with the same nostalgia as for the other l e g e n d a r y N o t re D a m e f o o t b a l l coaches, and we can only hope that the man who succeeds him can bring the same success to the program as Brian has already done. We all make mistakes, but he's do- ing an outstanding job in one of the toughest coaching gigs in the coun- try. Let's respect and appreciate the man while we have him.
