MICHIGAN HOCKEY Sitting Down With Junior Goalie Zach Nagelvoort Junior goalie Zach Nagelvoort started four of Michigan's first seven games this season — senior Steve Racine made the other three starts — and was 3-1-0 with a 3.00 goals-against average and .878 save percentage. The Wolverine: What do you think of the goalie battle currently, seemingly going back and forth game to game? Nagelvoort: "It's competitive right now. Neither of us has put together any type of con- sistent body of work so far this year. I've played in four games and he's played in four games, and we've both played well at times, and not as good as we need to play at other times. "The good news is we have two guys that can play. But we're still figuring this out. "I am confident that if I'm not in net on a Friday night it's be- cause Steve worked so hard that week that he deserves it more than I did, and he can say the same thing about me." The Wolverine: Do you think you have proven that you should be given the chance to be the full-time No. 1 goalie? Nagelvoort: "So here's the thing, that's not my decision to make. That's up to the coaches. In my head, I want to be in the net every single night. And Steve is the same way. If you don't have that mindset, I wouldn't want him to be my teammate. "I don't think you can be successful as a goalie without that type of confidence and belief in yourself, and desire to prove you're capable of being the guy night after night." The Wolverine: How has the competition impacted the chemistry among the goalies? In his first four starts of the season, Nagelvoort posted a 3-1-0 record with a 3.00 goals-against average and .878 save percentage. PHOTO BY LON HORWEDEL
