INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS FIVE YEARS AGO, 2010: Michigan won its tough- est non-conference game of the early schedule, knock- ing off Utah 75-64 behind sophomore guard Darius Morris' double-double. Morris tallied 19 points and 10 assists to guide the Wolverines to the win. Freshman guard Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 17 points in the game, while redshirt freshman forward Jordan Morgan and junior guard Zack Novak contributed 11 each. Novak also pulled down nine rebounds. That win lifted the Wolverines to 7-2 in the non- conference slate, matching head coach John Beilein's best start in his time at Michigan. The victory boosted U-M to 5-3 all time against Utah and avenged a loss at Salt Lake City from the season before. 10 Years Ago, 2005: Tommy Amaker's men's basketball squad kept its record perfect at 5-0, nailing down a tough 71-67 road victory at Notre Dame's Joyce Center. Senior Graham Brown proved rock solid for the Wolverines, going a perfect 6 of 6 from the floor and connecting on his one free throw en route to 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Daniel Horton paced Michigan's scoring effort, tossing in 19 points with seven assists. Notre Dame led 65-60 with only three minutes remaining. Brown's three-point play spurred a Michigan rally, and his tip-in tied the game at 67 with 1:10 left. A clutch baseline jumper by junior Dion Harris put the Wolverines ahead for good, and the Irish were unable to scramble back in the closing seconds. "Anytime you have a win over a really good school, and a good basketball pro- gram, and you add onto that that it's on the road, it certainly makes you feel good about your kids and your team," Amaker said. 25 Years Ago, 1990: Michigan won its third straight Great Lakes Invitational championship, knocking off runner-up Maine 3-1. The Wolverines had knocked off Michigan Tech 2-1 to reach the championship game. Those two goals against in two games ushered goalie Steve Shields into the status of GLI Most Valuable Player. In addition to Shields, defenseman Aaron Ward and forward Denny Felsner made the GLI All-Tournament Team. Shields went on the following year to claim the John MacInnes Trophy as MVP of the 1991 GLI as well. — John Borton THIS MONTH IN MICHIGAN ATHLETICS HISTORY TIM HARDAWAY JR.
