When it needed to make a play against him on the game's fi- nal drive, the Irish defenders came up short. Junior end Isaac Rochell was called for a facemask penalty against Hogan, and one play later the fifth-year senior signal-caller hit fifth-year senior wide receiver Devon Cajuste on an inside post route for a 27-yard gain to set up the game-winning field goal. After the game, Stanford head coach David Shaw noted he thought there would be open lanes on the inside of the Irish defense. When those lanes opened up, Hogan found them. "We saw they were in a two zone, so I saw the seams open," Hogan said of the 27-yard strike to Cajuste. "Devon ran a great route. I just hit him in stride, and we got into field goal range. It was just seeing the lanes." The failure to execute over the mid- dle and up the seams plagued Notre Dame all game long. "We've got to close down inside on that seam route," Kelly explained af- ter the game. "I thought we probably played a little bit too much outside in and worried about backing up. We've got to be more aggressive to the seam route." JAYLON SMITH CAPS OFF STRONG JUNIOR SEASON For the second straight season, ju- nior linebacker Jaylon Smith has gone over the 100-tackle mark. Smith en- tered the game with 98 stops on the season, and he ended the regular season with arguably the best perfor- mance of his career, finishing with a career-high 15 tackles in the defeat at Stanford.
