WOMEN'S BASKETBALL 2. Examination Time — Before breaking for classroom exams from Dec. 13-20, the Irish women face an arduous stretch from Nov. 28-Dec. 12 that could include UCLA, which had the nation's top-ranked recruiting class two years ago; potential top-10 team Ohio State, coached by for- mer McGraw assistant Kevin Mc- Guff; and, oh yes, at No. 1 UConn, an overwhelming favorite to win its fourth straight national title. In addition, DePaul on Dec. 9 has seldom been an easy out, followed by a road trip to TCU. 3. Marina Mabrey's Mo- ment — McGraw has been of the opinion that fresh- man guards Mabrey and Ogunbowale could be among Notre Dame's top five scorers this season, which they were through four games. That was aided by Mabrey tallying a team-high 18 points in the 110-54 trouncing of Valparaiso Nov. 23, while Ogunbowale added 16. Mabrey also compiled 12 steals and 10 assists to record the fifth triple- double in Notre Dame history. Notre Dame quickly put the game away in the first quarter with a 16-0 run and held a 32-7 advantage after the first 10-minute sequence. By halftime it led 53-18, and all 12 available players had been inserted. Mabrey already had 14 points and eight steals at that point. Ogunbowale began the night 0 of 6 from the floor, but finished with a 7-of-10 run. The goal with freshmen, according to McGraw, is establishing consistency. "You don't want them scoring 20 one night and zero the next to average 10," she said. — Lou Somogyi Freshman Marina Mabrey's triple-double at Valparaiso Nov. 23 featured 18 points, 12 steals and 10 assists.
