UNDER THE DOME Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Dennis Gilbert — Hockey The freshman defenseman from Williamsville, N.Y., scored the game-winning goal in No. 18 Notre Dame's 4-3 win at No. 3 Boston College Dec. 10, putting the Irish ahead on a slap shot with just 22 seconds left in regulation. A third-round pick by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Gilbert's goal was his first career game-winner, and his second goal overall on the season. Darius Zacharakis — Fencing The freshman from Houston picked up a bronze medal in the epee event at the final USA Fencing North American Cup event of the year, placing third in the Division 1 level at the Baltimore Convention Center Dec. 4-7. Zacharakis' third-place finish made him the first Irish fencer to earn bronze at a NAC Division 1 epee event in more than 10 years. Cari Roccaro — Women's Soccer The senior midfielder/defender from East Islip, N.Y., picked up third-team All-America honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Dec. 4, after her leadership on the back line helped the Irish defense allow only 11 goals in 20 total matches this season. A two-time Irish captain and four-time all-conference selection, Roccaro made 75 starts throughout her Notre Dame career, also picking up 13 goals and four assists in addition to her defensive contributions. Jessica Harris — Track The sophomore middle distance runner from Cockeysville, Md., captured first place in the women's mile at the Blue & Gold Invita- tional Dec. 4 at Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center. The 2015 All-ACC Academic Indoor Track & Field team honoree finished the race in a personal best time of 4:54.97, narrowly missing the 2016 ACC Indoor Championships' qualifying time of 4:53.55.
