IRISH IN THE PROS BY ANDREW OWENS T he start of spring practice for col‑ lege football programs across the nation also signals that the Major League Baseball regular season is right around the corner. There are a number of former Notre Dame players starting the season with teams old and new. CRAIG COUNSELL (MANAGER, MILWAUKEE BREWERS) Counsell, a former Notre Dame player that went on to win a World Se‑ ries with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, begins his second season — and first full year — as the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers. He twice played for the Brewers as a player and after retiring joined their front office. He was named manager one month into the 2015 season when Ron Roenicke was fired. PAT MURPHY (BENCH COACH, MILWAUKEE BREWERS) After the Brewers named Counsell their manager last May, they wanted to interview Murphy to join their staff. Murphy's employer at the time, the San Diego Padres, declined and later named him their interim manager that summer. This past offseason, San Diego de‑ cided not to renew Murphy's contract and Counsell and the Brewers imme‑ diately hired him. Murphy coached Notre Dame from 1988‑94. "We've had a 25‑year baseball con‑ versation," Counsell said.
