UVA shot a season-high 63 percent and held the 14th-ranked Mountaineers to 30 percent. Redshirt fourth-year forward Anthony Gill completely outplayed double-double ma- chine Devin Williams in a 70-54 win, which marked Virginia's first at MSG since win- ning the 1992 NIT championship. On Dec. 19, UVA hosted then-No. 12 Vil- lanova (an eventual Final Four team) at John Paul Jones Arena and beat the Wildcats at their own game, shooting 67 percent from three-point range en route to an 86-75 win. UVA was led by Gill's 22 points and seven rebounds. Brogdon added 20 points and six assists. Third-year point guard London Per- rantes contributed 19 points, which included three three-pointers. "We played a better team today," Villa- nova head coach Jay Wright said. "Their attention to detail and execution is just on another level than ours right now." Three days later, Virginia hosted a Califor- nia team loaded with NBA prospects. UVA trailed by as many as 11 points before forc- ing an overtime. In the extra session, Virginia trailed by six before rallying. A three-pointer by Perrantes with 12 seconds left gave UVA a 63-62 win. "It was not too clean of a look," Perrantes said of the game-winner. "I felt like if I had a little bit of daylight, I was just going to let it go." While Perrantes shot the ball, he believed he had been fouled and shouted, "And one." "Yeah, I got hit, but it still goes in," Per- Redshirt fourth-year guard Malcolm Brogdon became the first player in league history to be named the ACC's Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, and joined Ralph Sampson as the only Cavaliers to earn first-team All- America honors.
