rantes said, "so I can't complain." For Virginia, it was a great way to head into the Christmas break. However, UVA had an unexpected slide in the new year. Virginia lost at Virginia Tech (70-68), at Georgia Tech (68-64) and at Florida State (69-62), and had just a 4-3 ACC record head- ing into its game at Wake Forest Jan. 26. UVA trailed by 10 points with 1:23 re- maining before mounting a comeback for the ages. Brogdon scored eight points in the final 1:16, including a three-pointer with six sec- onds that cut the lead to a point. Wake Forest freshman Bryant Crawford then missed the second of two free throws, which set the stage for redshirt second-year guard Darius Thompson. With four seconds on the clock, Virginia pushed the ball up the court. When redshirt second-year guard Devon Hall couldn't find Brogdon, he fired it to Thompson on the wing. With Wake Forest big man Devin Thomas draped all over him, Thomas threw up a prayer. "I was trying to get the foul called at first," Thompson said, "but didn't get the foul called, threw it up and it happened to go off the backboard and in." Thompson never saw his shot go in. "I saw my teammates jumping up and down and running at me," he said. "I was like, 'I guess I made the shot.'" Virginia players stormed the court to cel- ebrate the 72-71 win as a stunned Joel Coli- seum crowd looked on. "It was a miracle, a once-in-a-lifetime shot," Thomas said. The win in Winston-Salem, which was subsequently dubbed by some as "The Awakening," sparked new life into Virginia.
