On occasion, the UVA Compliance Of- fice receives questions from VAF staff and VAF donors about the permissibility of providing a team or student-athlete(s) a meal, snack or coffee either while in Char- lottesville or if the team is on the road. NCAA rules do provide this opportunity for VAF members in a limited capacity. If a VAF member wishes to provide an occa- sional meal, snack or coffee, the following must occur: • The VAF member must contact the UVA Compliance Office prior to providing the meal, seek approval and complete the occasional meal form. In order for the Compliance Office to approve the meal, the student-athlete(s) or team must have approval from the appro- priate head coach. If the head coach and Compliance Office approve, the following NCAA rules must be followed: • The meal may only be provided at a restaurant on Grounds or the VAF member's home and may be catered. The UVA Com- p l i a n c e O f f i c e would also like to remind VAF mem- bers that while it may be permissible to provide an occa- sional home meal to a team or stu- dent-athlete(s), it is not permissible to pay for a student-athlete(s) and/or their guests' meal if you see them eating at a restaurant. As innocent as it seems, NCAA rules would consider that an NCAA extra benefit violation and cause the student- athlete(s) to become ineligible. Our email address is athleticscompli- ance@virginia.edu and our telephone number is 434/982- 5018 to discuss any occasional meal requests. As always, we appreciate your support for Virginia ath- letics!
