CAVALIER SPORTS
GETTING TO KNOW
THIRD-YEAR SOFTBALL PLAYER
KAITLIN FITZGERALD
If Virginia third-year infielder Kaitlin Fitzgerald was
an actress in a Broadway play, critics might say she
began her Virginia softball career to rave reviews.
Fitzgerald, a native of Placentia, Calif., transferred
to Virginia after one season at St. John's. As a sec-
ond-year, she led the Cavaliers in batting average
(.360), hits (52) and RBI (42) in 2015.
She also was second on the team with a .506 slug-
ging percentage and had a .404 on-base percent-
age. Most impressive was the fact Fitzgerald was the
14th-toughest player in the country to strike out,
averaging 28.7 at-bats per strikeout.
At season's end, Fitzgerald was voted to the Vir-
ginia Sports Information Directors All-State First
Team.
Fitzgerald was batting a modest .277 through 37
games this season, but she was tied for second on
the team with 26 hits and tied for second with 14
RBI. In addition, she had struck out only three times
in 100 plate appearances.
My advice to student-athletes is: Have great
time management between classes and competi-
tion.
