INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Student Athlete Of The Month Women's Lacrosse Junior Margaret Metzger Growing up in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., women's lacrosse junior Margaret Metzger was raised a Michigan fan. However, being brought up in the Maize and Blue doesn't automatically mean one will attend U-M. "I had always been a Michigan fan, but when I got towards high school I thought I might want to go out of state and see something different," Metzger explained. "But then my older sister went to Michigan, and whenever I went to visit her I fell in love with the place. "It really all came together when I found out they were starting a Division I lacrosse team. That was during my soph- omore year of high school, and it ended up being perfect tim- ing." Once lacrosse became part of the picture, Metzger knew that Michigan was where she wanted to be. Still, wanting to go to U-M and getting accepted are two very different things. She knew that grades would be important from an early age and took school very seriously. Metzger graduated summa cum laude from Lahser High School with a 4.0 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society. "I always knew that academics would be my ticket into Michi- gan," she said. "Michigan is a non-traditional lacrosse area so it's tough to get recruited. My goal when I was looking at schools was to get myself in first through academics and from there, hope that the lacrosse Metzger has started 12 of the first 13 games this year for the women's lacrosse team.
