BY MICHAEL SPATH R edshirt sophomore Wilton Speight wasn't slated to talk to the media following the Wolverines' spring game April 1, but after an outstanding performance that saw him lead the Maize team to a pair of touchdowns in a 14-13 win over the Blue team, the 6-6, 239-pounder was a clear choice for the throng of reporters. The quarterback completed five of six pass attempts for 46 yards with a touchdown — a 13-yard crossing route to senior tight end Jake Butt. Speight also rushed for a six-yard TD. Yet, he wasn't exactly thrilled with his overall effort, lamenting a long pass down the sideline (caught by sophomore wide receiver Grant Perry out of bounds) that he missed on. Speight did come back after that er- rant throw to complete a 14-yard pass to Perry for a first down, with his of- fense scoring five plays later to tie the game at 7-7. "I wasn't happy just because we weren't able to drive the ball down the field as much as I like to and Coach [Jedd] Fisch likes to," Speight said. "That's one thing we always agree on, giving the guys a shot, the receivers a chance to go make a play 30-40 yards down the field, and we were able to do that a lot this spring but not [in the spring game]. "But it was a good day all around." It would be easy to overreact to a single practice, albeit one under the lights in front of 35,000 spectators, but the spring game did appear to reveal that Speight and redshirt junior John O'Korn are emerging as the front- runners to start under center for the Maize and Blue in the fall.
