Since a new NHL collective bargaining agreement was signed in 2005‑06, the Maize and Blue have seen 43 draft picks try for a career professionally or stay four years at Michigan. Four of those — Mike Brown, Kevin Quick, Robbie Czarnik and Jason Bailey — left Ann Arbor early, though not to sign with their NHL team, just deciding Michigan wasn't right for them. The remaining 38 can be divided into two camps: those that stayed four years (23) and those that left early for an NHL opportunity, signing a contract with their parent club (16). Among the 16 NHL Draft picks to go pro before completing their eligibility at Michigan, seven were first‑round picks and five were second‑round selections (75.0 percent total), demonstrating the pressure placed on them to get started on their potential NHL careers. Ten of the 16 early departures have played in the NHL, including first‑round choices Jack Johnson, Andrew Cogliano, Max Pacioretty, Jacob Trouba and Dylan Larkin, while Zach Werenski x Kyle Connor are sure to join both lists.
