JULY 2016 ■ 145 ■ BASKETBALL RECRUITING Rivals.com. He helped guide Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy to a 45-1 record and the title at the Dick's Sporting Goods high school national tournament. Coleman had eight points, seven assists and four rebounds in the 62-60 win over La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere in the title game April 2 in Manhattan, N.Y. Former NC State assistant coach Rob Moxley recruited Coleman during the sea- son, and Early has picked up the baton since mid-March. "Coach Early has been talking to me a lot recently," Coleman said. "They think Dennis Smith is going to be a one-and-done. I've also been hearing from coach Mark Gottfried, who will tell me, 'Be my guy. I want you run- ning my show.'" Coleman was a middle school star and part of the Boo Williams 16s squad during his eighth-grade year. The Boo Williams pro- gram produced a pair of recent NC State alums — star point guard Anthony Barber and center DeShawn Painter. Coleman averaged 12.6 points, 3.3 re- bounds and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 53.2 percent from the field for Boo Williams in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League, but the team didn't qualify for the Nike Peach Jam. Coleman didn't have to look too hard to notice the NCSU coaches at his Boo Williams games during the April evaluation period. "They were at all my games," Coleman said. "That does make an impact. It shows they want me as a priority. You want to go to a school that wants you." Coleman grew up watching Barber in the Tidewater area — Barber attended Hampton (Va.) High and played with Boo Williams. Coleman understands better than most what kind of job the NC State coaches did with Barber for the last three years. "That really opened my eyes. They really let their guards go," Coleman said. "They have the ultra green light to put the ball in the hole. It showed what I could do if I was the next guard to come in there." Coleman is a quick and explosive ath- lete, and has a good mid-range pull-up lefty jumper. He is more of a pass-first traditional point guard compared to Barber. "You could see Barber get more confi- dence in his jump shot," Coleman noted. "His ability to use his speed, quickness and handle helped him create space and get by players. "You could see him mature as a player and the growth in his game." Coleman said he has been prioritized by NC State, Texas, Arizona, Seton Hall, Indi- ana, Florida and Arizona. He has been offered by at least 15 colleges and hopes to trim his list in July or early August.
