MICHIGAN BASKETBALL BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK with Michigan State — a 60-59 win at Crisler Arena Jan. 17, fol- lowed by a 64-54 loss in East Lansing Feb. 5 — left the Wol- verines 94-75 in the all-time series against the Spartans. Michigan is now 58-28 in games played in Ann Arbor, and had won three straight in the series (for the first time since 1998) prior to MSU's victory at the Breslin Center. Burke, meanwhile, posted a career-high three steals in the loss. • Michigan fell to 3-3 all time against Arkansas with a 66-64 the win over the Spartans, scoring nine points and tying for the team lead in rebounds, with four. U-M's previ- ous best road effort involved a 10-point win at Northwestern in 2008. • Michigan shackled the Corn- the 45th Michigan player ever to top the 1,000-point mark (1,008) in his career. He also came away from the win with 569 career rebounds, making him the 28th Michigan player to enter the 1,000/500 club. • Junior Matt Vogrich logged his best effort in Big Ten play against the Cornhuskers, coming off the bench to connect on all three of his three-point attempts. His nine points were second only to the 11 he notched against Arkansas-Pine Bluff Dec. 13. • Sophomore Evan Smotrycz scored a season-high 13 the lowest total any Big Ten squad has scored against the Wolverines in a half this year. • Novak tossed in 14 points against Nebraska, becoming points for a Big Ten game in Michigan's 70-61 win over Il- linois Feb. 12. He also recorded a career-high four steals, to go along with three rebounds and two assists. • Michigan featured two players in the top 15 Big Ten scor- time series record against the Buckeyes to 64-94, including 27-55 in Columbus. U-M's 49 points in the loss represented a season low. • The Wolverines' 68-56 victory over Indiana Feb. 1 boosted their overall record against the Hoosiers to 56-101, including play. The marksmanship included hitting 60 percent in the second half, helping the Wolverines steal a crucial road victory. • Michigan's 64-49 loss at Ohio State Jan. 29 dropped its all- victorious effort in seven tries at Mackey Arena. The Wolver- ines snapped a two-game losing streak to the Boilermakers and improved to 62-83 in the all-time series. • U-M shot 54 percent at Purdue, its best effort in Big Ten huskers to a season-low 15 first- half points. The score marked ers in conference play through Feb. 12. Northwestern's John Shurna led the league at 20.4 points per game, while Burke was eighth at 15.1 and sophomore Tim Hardaway Jr. 13th at 13.8. • Morgan stood seventh in the league in rebounding, aver- aging 5.9 per game. He was also second in field goal shoot- ing (59.7 percent), trailing only Indiana freshman Cody Zeller (63.5). Novak stood 15th (49.4). • Burke was second in the league in assists, averaging 4.5 per game, behind only Penn State's Tim Frazier (5.7). The U-M freshman was also fifth in assist/turnover ratio (1.8) and eighth in average minutes played (37.1). • Novak (40.8 percent) and Douglass (40.0 percent) were 12th and tied for 13th, respectively, in three-point shooting in league play.
